Windows 10 no internet connection

You may experience no internet in Windows 10. Apart from no internet, failed to print on network printer, no to access shared folder and application may stop working as well. This may be due to a network hardware failure, broken cable or misconfiguration in the network setting of your PC.

To solve this problem, the first step would be troubleshooting hardware and physical resources, these are cables, routers and modems. Then you’ll have to check the software side of the machine, it is the operating system, settings or configuration and installed applications such as anti-virus or firewall.

In this post, I will show you the Windows 10 network troubleshooting guide to address connectivity problems of computers at home or office.

By simply looking at the Network and Internet access status on your lower right portion of the screen, you may be able to determine the cause of network or internet loss. The LAN or Wi-Fi icon shows the current connection status, it may be connected, limited or disconnected.

What if you see a connected status but still no internet connection? If you are having connection issues, this article may help you to find a quick solution.

Here’s how to fix no internet in Windows 10

1. Run Windows Network Diagnostics

 To run windows network diagnostics, follow this step

  • Right click on Network and Internet icon, then click Troubleshoot problems or 
  • Go to Windows Settings, Network and internet, and click troubleshoot or 
  • Go to Control Panel, Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, on the left side click Change adapter settings, right click your Ethernet adapter or Wireless network adapter then click Diagnose

Your PC will check itself and show you the possible solution afterwards.

2. Restart your PC

Save your open document and close all applications. By restarting your system, it closes unnecessary running applications that may cause your internet loss. It would also refresh your network adapters to obtain correct IP address and DNS server values from your router.

3. Check your Ethernet cable for PC

Your Ethernet cable or LAN cable looks like a bigger telephone cable at the back of your machine. It may be detached or unplugged from your LAN port because of movement or unprofessional crimping of RJ45 connector. If there are no lights blinking on the LAN port, unplug your cable then plug it back again.

4. Disable Airplane Mode

If your machine is in Airplane Mode, it won’t connect to the internet and network because your wireless communication is turned off. To turn it on again, simply switch off your Airplane Mode setting.

  • Go to Windows Settings, Network and internet, click Airplane Mode then toggle switch to Off mode.

5. Make sure your Wi-Fi adapter is switched On

Check the status of your WiFi, turn it on if this is disabled. If your WiFi is disabled it won’t connect to wireless hotspots. In your keyboard there are function keys that allow you to enable or disable this feature. So, make sure you don’t turn it off accidentally by typing.

  • Click Network and Internet icon, toggle switch to switch on WiFi or 
  • Go to Windows Settings, Network and Internet, click WiFi on the left side then toggle switch to turn it on 
  • Go to Control Panel, Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, on the left side click Change adapter settings, then right click WiFi adapter and click enable

You can do the same thing with your Ethernet Adapter, make sure it is not disabled

6. Restart your Router or Network Firewall 

Try restarting your network router or firewall that serves as a DHCP server. If there are IP conflicts with other hosts, a simple restart would help to resolve the connection problem. Or maybe it is just the router that hangs up, so we have to power cycle.

Other ways to resolve no internet in Windows 10

7. IP release, renew and flush dns

If the above solution didn’t work, you may try releasing the IP address assigned by the DHCP server or by your router. Then renew it to get a new IP address value. Along with this trick, you have to flush dns also to ensure that you get the right network values.

Open Command Prompt window by running as administrator, then type the following in sequence. Press enters each command.

First, ipconfig /release

Then, ipconfig /renew

Lastly, ipconfig /flushdns

8. Set TCP/IPv4 setting to obtain automatically

If you are configured with static IP address, note down the values or take a photo of it before changing anything so you can restore the current setting anytime. You may not get an internet connection because of incorrect IP settings; this includes DNS as well. To troubleshoot the issue, try setting up the TCP/IPv4 to obtain automatically.

  • Go to Windows Settings, Network and Internet, on the left side click Ethernet then click Change adapter options, right click Ethernet adapter then click Properties, select Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the options, then click properties, another window will pop up, tick the dot with Obtain an IP address automatically, tick also Obtain DNS server address automatically.

9. Scan for Malware

Try running anti-malware software. Malware or malicious software can cause slowdown of your computer and sometimes it can kill your browsing sessions. You may download Junkware Removal Tool, it is a software utility that removes adware, and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) from your computer. You have to run the file as an administrator, if it doesn’t work, try to reboot your PC into safe mode and repeat the process.

​10. Call your ISP

The last thing you can do is to find your internet service provider’s hotline number. Report your connection issue, they would create a ticket number for you, keep it for reference, then you have to wait for their technical staff to investigate and fix the issue.
